Sacramental Chest

As Catholics, we are accustomed to having religious objects "blessed," which signifies the permanent sanctification and dedication of an object for some sacred purpose. Once a religious object is blessed and dedicated for divine worship or veneration, it must be treated with reverence and must not be used in either an improper or profane way (cf. Code of Canon Law, #1171). What happens when you no longer have use for a religious object? Your palm from Palm Sunday is all dried out, but it was blessed during the Palm Sunday Mass. You realize you have 95 rosaries, but you really don’t need more than five. Or your rosary has broken, but you can’t just throw it away, so you have a drawer filled with broken beads. The basic rule for the disposition of these items is to burn or to bury them. Having this in mind and a desire to aid the Community of Queen of Peace, the Veterans Ministry, assisted by Seminarian Javier Valles, made this wooden chest. The idea is for the community to bring all their broken-down or worn-down religious items and place them in this chest. Our Veterans Ministry, who has generously volunteered, will take these items and properly handle them. As needed, the ministry will sort through the items, identify what needs to be burned or buried or both. What can we put in the Chest? The general rule of thumb is: if it has been blessed or if you think it was blessed before it was gifted to you, and if time has rendered it unusable, put it in the chest. We will take care of it. Seminarian Javier F. Valles Jr. made and left this chest as a gift of thanksgiving to the community of Queen of Peace and to God, for the pastoral year he spent here. He thanks God for the time he was able to spend with such a generous, carrying and loving community. Who knows, in God’s sense of humor, he may be back one day as pastor.
